Maternal Near Miss National Stakeholder Engagement Workshop 2020

Maternal Near Miss Study had its first National Stakeholder Engagement Workshop.  The goal of the workshop was to provide technical guidance and implementation progress on integrating maternal near miss audits with the Maternal Death Surveillance and Response.  The workshop brought together maternal healthcare policy makers including representatives from the participating districts of Chikwawa, Thyolo and Blantyre, the Ministry of Health, Reproductive Health Directorate, Quality Management and Digital Health Department and Central Monitoring and Evaluation Division, development partners including USAID, WHO, UNICEF, Malawi Blood Transfusion Services, and various learning institutions and healthcare services providers.  Key points from the meeting were the negative impact that COVID-19 has had on the supply of blood resources and how that in turn has affected maternal care.  The teams agreed to revive hospital blood committees to improve efficiency in the utilisation of the scarce blood resources.  The team also discussed ways on how to make the integration sustainable beyond the life of the study and scale up to the other districts.
