Profile

Background

The Centre for Reproductive Health (CRH) is led by Scientific Operations Manager Dr. Effie Chipeta. CRH is an interdisciplinary and cross-departmental grouping within the Malawi College of Medicine that undertakes research and implementation testing in the reproductive health field. CRH was established in 2002 in Blantyre, Malawi as a capacity building project. The College of Medicine (CoM) was established in 1991 as a constituent college within the University of Malawi (UNIMA). It is the only medical school in Malawi. The CoM has gradually grown from a program with an intake of 10-15 students per year and a handful of Malawian faculty, to a program with a medical student intake of on average 60 per year with 110 faculty members, of whom approximately 67% are Malawians. To date the college has graduated over 250 medical doctors.

The CRH provides leadership, training and research expertise in order to build the human capacity required to scale up the implementation of the national reproductive health programmes. To achieve this aim, the CRH has three main functions: conducting operations research in reproductive health; postgraduate students teaching and research supervision and training various stakeholders to build capacity for professional development, SRH leadership and awareness of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) among young people and the vulnerable in society.

CRH also promotes networking and research collaboration among various research institutions both locally and internationally. CRH researchers have social science, biomedical, clinical and public health backgrounds. The Centre has a number of projects relating to adolescent work, and to interventions to promote reproductive health and safety in pregnancy and childbirth.
